Why Queensland Reserves Plumbing for Licence Holders

In Queensland, the person doing plumbing or drainage work must hold an occupational licence, and the firm carrying the job must also hold a contractor licence. The QBCC grants both.

What each layer proves:

  • The occupational licence proves the holder has the trade skills for the work.
  • The contractor licence proves the firm behind the job has the financial standing and business training to take work on properly.

Three licence classes divide the work itself:

  1. A plumber's licence

covers plumbing work on fixtures and pipework, aside from work singled out for an endorsement of its own.

  2. A drainer's licence

looks after the below-ground drainage side, also aside from work singled out for a separate endorsement.

  3. Gas work

sits on its own licence: only a licensed gasfitter can fit, change, repair or certify a gas system along with the pipework feeding it.

That is why our gas fitting work always stays with a licensed gasfitter, never a general hand. We hold QBCC No: 15024607, and the QBCC's own advice to owners is that using licensed trades protects the house, their health and their rights.

Who Checks Plumbing Work and What You Receive

Oversight splits two ways: the QBCC licenses the trades and records notifiable work, while Brisbane City Council takes the applications, grants the permits and sends inspectors.

Paperwork that should reach you as an owner:

  • A Form 4 copy after notifiable work. The QBCC records the notice against the property and can supply a copy if yours never turns up.
  • A gas compliance certificate handed over as soon as new gas work or an alteration is finished, with a copy going to the network operator inside 5 days where the system feeds from one.

The council will also inspect notifiable work whenever an owner asks during the job. Its inspector may attend, with the occupier's consent, if the council contacts the home within 1 year of the QBCC receiving the notice.

How a Visit Runs

  1. 1

    Call or message us

Ring (07) 3523 7121 or use the form and describe what's going on in McDowall. A few details up front mean the right gear comes on the first trip.

  2. 2

We diagnose on site and quote

Your plumber traces the fault, explains the fix, and prices it as a flat-rate figure you approve first. Once the work is done it gets tested on the spot, and any Form 4 or gas certificate is left with you.

  3. 3

    Fixed quote, then the work

We give you a fixed quote before any work starts. It's flat-rate pricing with no hidden fees, and we only start once you approve it.

  4. 4

    Settle up your way

Card and EFTPOS payment on site when the job's finished, or Fix now, pay later if that suits you better.

Questions to Ask Before You Book

Call (07) 3523 7121

How do I check that a plumber is licensed in Queensland?

Use the QBCC's free online licence search, which shows whether a plumber is currently licensed and, searched by address, whether a Form 4 was registered for your property. For gas work you can also ask the tradesman to show the gas work licence before he begins.

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

A plumber works on the water side: taps, fixtures and the pipes running through the house. A drainer takes the below-ground side of drainage, such as a sewer line out to the boundary. Queensland gives each class its own licence, and tradesmen often hold both.

Is every plumbing job in McDowall done by a licensed plumber?

Yes, every job is done by a licensed plumber. We work under QBCC No: 15024607, licensed and insured, and gas fitting always goes to a licensed gasfitter.

Does plumbing work in McDowall come with a warranty?

Yes, every job's labour carries a lifetime labour warranty, backed by our Fix-It-or-It's-Free guarantee (T&Cs apply). The cover is for workmanship, so if a finished job needs attention you ring us and we come back.
